This set contains three patterns for discrete minimal surfaces. They are surfaces of minimal area which occur naturally, for example in soap bubbles.
These models are discrete version of minimal surfaces. All three are periodic and can be continued to an infinite surface using multiple copies of the same surface.
There are different ways to define minimality (e.g. minimal mean curvature, minimal local area, etc.) but in some sense each of these surfaces is minimal.
