The Penrose tiling is a special kind of tessellation: It is not periodic! Contrary to other tilings like a checkered pattern the way these tiles are combined is different at every point starting from the origin in the center of the pattern.
This pattern was first discovered by British mathematician Roger Penrose and consists of only two different tiles (“Darts” and “Kites”).
For more background and the relation of this aperiodic tiling to the Golden ratio take a look at the video.
